What Is Movie Night Mode?

Movie Night is the official directive 8020 couch co-op mode designed for local, same-room multiplayer.

Instead of requiring multiple consoles or split-screen views, the game is played on a single screen. At the start of the campaign, players enter their names and are assigned control of specific Cassiopeia crew members (such as Brianna Young). When the game transitions from one character's perspective to another, the UI prompts players to pass the single controller to the assigned person. You watch the cinematic story together, but individual players hold the controller during their character's exploration, dialogue choices, and high-stress Mimic evasion sequences.

How to Set Up Couch Co-op Movie Night in Directive 8020

Step-by-step setup guide

To initiate a local directive 8020 Movie Night session, follow these steps from the main menu:(Note: Exact UI button paths are marked as pending final launch-day verification, but the standard flow remains identical to preview builds).

1

Select "Don't Play Alone" / Multiplayer

Choose the Movie Night option from the main menu.

2

Add Players

Input the names of 2 to 5 local players.

3

Assign Characters

The game will distribute the available crew members among the entered names.

4

Select Difficulty/Mode

Choose between Explorer Mode (which enables Turning Points) or Survivor Mode (which locks consequences permanently).

5

Pass the Controller

The game will indicate whose turn it is when the prologue begins.

Group Play Tip: If your group has players inexperienced with horror games, assign them characters during slower exploration segments, and reserve characters with heavy QTE action sequences for veteran players.
05

Player Count and Role Assignment

Official materials describe Movie Night as playable with up to five friends/players.

Number of PlayersHow Roles Are Assigned
2 PlayersThe roster is split. Player 1 may control 3 characters, while Player 2 controls 2 characters.
3 - 4 PlayersThe game divides the 5 main characters as evenly as possible among the group.
5 PlayersEvery player is assigned exactly one primary playable character.
Warning: If a character dies early in the story, the player assigned to them will have significantly less playtime for the remainder of the session.

Directive 8020 Online Movie Night Status

Current state of online multiplayer

Directive 8020 online co-op is not available on launch day.

Official reviews and developer communications confirm that Online Movie Night will roll out as a free post-launch update. When released, this update will allow up to five players to connect remotely to play the Movie Night format online.

Do not trust unofficial ETAs or dates unless published directly by Bandai Namco or Supermassive Games. Check our Updates Tracker for the latest deployment patch notes.

Directive 8020 Shared Story Caveat

Critical information for Dark Pictures Anthology veterans

There is massive community confusion regarding the removal of Shared Story.

In Season One of The Dark Pictures Anthology, Shared Story was a 2-player online synchronous mode where players controlled different characters in different areas simultaneously.

Shared Story Has Been Permanently Removed

Because the game introduces real-time stealth threats, permadeath exploration, and the highly complex Turning Points story tree, maintaining a synchronized two-player simultaneous narrative was technically and narratively unfeasible. If you are buying the game strictly to play the old 2-player simultaneous format, you will be disappointed. Online Movie Night (when launched) is a turn-based, shared-screen experience, not Shared Story.

Steam, Remote Play, Friend Pass, Crossplay Notes

Platform-specific multiplayer features require careful verification

Steam Co-op Tags

The Steam store lists "Shared/Split Screen Co-op". Do not misinterpret this tag as native 2-player online Shared Story. It refers exclusively to local Movie Night.

Steam Remote Play Together

PC players can technically use Steam Remote Play to stream their local Movie Night session to remote friends right now. However, this relies on your internet connection and is a Steam platform feature, not native directive 8020 online co-op.

Crossplay

Cross-platform play between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC for the upcoming Online Movie Night is [Currently Not Confirmed].

Friend Pass

Previous games occasionally offered a "Friend Pass" to let one owner invite a free player. This is [Currently Not Confirmed] for Directive 8020.

Directive 8020 Co-op, Choices, Endings and Trophies

How group play affects your game

Does playing directive 8020 couch co-op alter the story? Yes. Because you are passing the controller, your friends will be making high-stakes decisions. If Player 3 fails a Bioscanner check and lets an alien Mimic onto the ship, it will affect Player 1's character later on.

Trophy Caveat: Group choices dramatically affect story outcomes. Trophy and ending impacts should be verified in dedicated trackers. Do not assume playing Movie Night guarantees specific co-op achievements unless verified.

Directive 8020 Common Co-op Mistakes

Review these common community misunderstandings before finalizing your purchase

Mistake: "Directive 8020 has online co-op at launch."

Correction: Online Movie Night is a free post-launch update. It is not currently live.

Mistake: "Movie Night is just the new name for Shared Story."

Correction: False. Movie Night is pass-the-controller. Shared Story (simultaneous play) is completely removed.

Mistake: "The Steam co-op tag means legacy online is back."

Correction: Store categories indicate local couch co-op support, not traditional online networking.

Mistake: "Crossplay and Friend Pass are guaranteed."

Correction: Neither feature has been officially confirmed by Bandai Namco at this time.
